No Comments I recently acquired an Apple Airport Express (gracias a kamyn1) with the intent of wirelessly broadcasting music/audio from my computer (one side of the room) to my home stereo system (other side of the room) using the AirTunes functionality. This has been a good solution for me as it’s designed for iTunes and that’s what I primarily use to play music on my computer.
First, you need to install the Airport Express. This can be a difficult process depending on your level of experience with wireless networking; if you’re having trouble, visit the Apple Support page for the AirPort. To use the device, begin by running the installation software that comes with the device (or download it from Apple) on your computer. You will also need to connect the Airport Express to your stereo; for this, you can either use a 1/8″ to RCA connector or 1/8″ to Optical/Toslink connector and hook it to your stereo receiver or other audio input.
Once you’ve setup your wireless network and connected the Airport to your stereo, you can begin broadcasting music from your computer to your stereo using iTunes. In iTunes, check Edit->Preferences->Advanced to make sure “Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes” is selected. In the bottom right-hand corner of the iTunes screen, a dropdown list will show the speakers iTunes is able to connect to. It will allow you to select “Computer” to play audio through your computer speakers, and the list will also include the names of any identified Airport Express connections. In my case, it shows as “Casa Express” so it’s ready to play. Once I select “Casa Express,” iTunes connects and begins playing audio through the speakers connected to the Airport.
This works well for playing music from iTunes; however, I also want to be able to play other file types besides MP3, AAC, and Apple’s DRMed files; specifically, I want to be able to play FLAC files.
Thanks to another attendee at SaturdayHouse, I discovered Airfoil. Here’s the description:
With Airfoil for Windows [or Mac] you can take audio from any application and send to your AirPort Express units, as well as Apple TVs, and even other PCs and Macs running Airfoil Speakers! Transmit audio from Winamp, RealPlayer, and other media players. Send audio from Rhapsody, Yahoo Music, and other music stores. Even web-based applications like Pandora, Last.fm, can now be transmitted wirelessly.
The good news about Airfoil is you can install a fully working demo version (Windows, Mac) in order to try it out before you buy it. I downloaded it, installed both the Airfoil for Windows and Airfoil Speakers applications.
At this point, I discovered my used AirPort Express had an outdated firmware version that I needed to update. No problem - I downloaded and ran the AirPort Express 6.3 firmware updater (Windows, Mac). (Note: The Windows version didn’t work on Vista for me, but I had no trouble running the update from a Windows XP installation connected to the same wireless network.)
Now that I had Airfoil installed, I ran both the Airfoil and Airfoil Speakers applications. I then booted up Winamp (features include FLAC support) to try the wireless broadcast using a FLAC-rip of Motion City Soundtrack’s album “Evin If It Kills Me.”
In Airfoil, I selected Winamp from the application list at the bottom of the screen. Then I clicked the volume icon next to the name for my Airport Express (Casa Express) and adjusted the volume. Airfoil informed me it needed to restart Winamp so I let it. Once Winamp loaded back up, I pressed play again and then my stereo (which was already turned on and set to the channel the Airport Express is hooked to) began to play the Motion City Soundtrack album.
In the demo version, it starts to make noise on the sound after 10 minutes. With the product fully working, I decided to give them my $25 so I can enjoy the benefits of the Airport Express with any application on my computer and not just iTunes.
Fring has launched an iPhone version of their service, and the good news is it’s free.
Fring enables you to chat with your friends on a bunch of different networks including, MSN, GoogleTalk, AIM, Yahoo Twitter, ICQ and Skype.
As well as being able to chat, Fring offers the ability to use VoiP over the iPhone’s WiFi connection.

Just a quick test post using the new iPhone wordpress client. It seems to be a little bare-bones at the moment.
The interface is a bit confusing, particularly the keyboard handling in the editor. (the location of done/save should really be switched).
Here’s a picture I took in palm springs on Saturday, though images don’t appear to be shown inlined.

The first reviews of iPhone are coming. Mr. I-Get-My-Hands-on-Apple-Stuff-First, David Pogue, thinks the iPhone lives up to most of the hype. Also Mossberg has an extensive review, fairly positive. The bottom line of Newsweek’s review is that the phone has a lot of potential in the long run. Interesting.
I think it’s too soon to say anything about the quality and power of the iPhone yet, but at last we get to make some impressions of it.
So, I was reading an article about how Macs cost twice as much as PCs, and how they’re such a rip off, and only gullible consumers buy Macs. I thought, oh no, not again, not the vim vs emacs, linux vs windows troll bait.
Anyway, Macs cost a lot of money, PC’s cost less money. We get it. Pound for pound, spec for spec blah blah blah.
Well did you know that if you drive a Porsche at 60 miles per hour, and a Nissan Sentra at 60 miles per hour, they both travel the same distance at the same rate? They both stop for red lights, and they both get to the same destination at the same time? So why buy a Porsche?
Personal preference, some people like mid engine cars, some people like rear wheel, some people like the ability to get to 60 MPH in 4 seconds (please don’t start on exact times, or model numbers). People work hard for their money, and they usually make a conscious decision to buy a mac, they feel it gives them a better experience, and they’re willing to pay more for it.
I’m sure you can make your Ubuntu, Windows, OS X box to do the same things the other OS has, or you can find 40 reasons why y or more open than z.
Yes I’m sure you can tune your Sentra to go from 0-60 in 4 seconds, but that doesn’t mean that everyone should do it.
Let them be. They aren’t spending your money, let them spend it how they want to. Don’t you have a more pressing problem like:

Apple is now selling an unlock version of iPhone 3G through its online Apple Store in Hong Kong. This arouses much interest in the iPhone communities. A number of news websites or tech blogs such as Engadget, PC World, Wired have coverage on the news. The unlock version of iPhone 3G is selling at HKD$5400 (USD$692) for 8G version and HKD$6200 (USD$795) for 16GB version. As checked out at Apple Store, Apple explains when you plan to purchase the iPhone 3G that iPhone 3G can be used freely with any carrier:
iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation.
Earlier, iPhone 3G has been available in Hong Kong since mid-Jul but exclusively sold via 3HK, a carrier in Hong Kong. Same as iPhone 3G sold in other countries, you can only purchase it along with 2-year contract with 3HK. As reported by computer magazines in Hong Kong and source from CNet Asia, at that time, iPhone 3G is already unlocked. It can work with any SIM card. But it’s just not a wise decision to buy iPhone 3G along 2-year data plan and use SIM card from other carriers.
From what I know, this should be the first time Apple selling unlock iPhone 3G online. As I checked, Apple Store Online in US, UK, Canada or Singapore does not have such offering. This probably will trigger some Hong Kongers to purchase it and resell unlock iPhone 3G to other countries.
There should be a huge demand for unlock iPhone 3G. As what Apple advertised in Hong Kong online store, “iPhone 3G - Buy directly from Apple. And choose your carrier”. Yes, we all want to choose our own carrier. Hope the unlock version of iPhone 3G will be extended to other markets.

WoW. This is so cool. I just arrived into office and Farul, my colleague showed me his new iPhone 16GB 3G. He wants to sell it off for RM2900. He got it from New Zealand and its a full unlock version. Too bad its a black one. I am dying to see the 16GB white version.
